धुनों की यात्रा

DHUNO KI YATRA (Hindi)
Biographies of Music Composers in Hindi Films from 1931 – 2005
By Pankaj Rag
2006 250 x 190 mm 767 pp
Hardcover Deluxe Edition

We all associate Hindi films especially the old ones with their melodious music.
Behind this soulful music are legendary film music composers such as Naushad, Pannalal Ghosh, Salil Chaudhary, SD Burman, Rahul Burman, Chitra Gupt, Shankar Jaikishan, Lakshmikant Pyarelal, Ravindra Jain, etc. right up to AR Rehman and Ilayaraja. Their most famous compositions, the stories surrounding them, old posters of their movies and records, along with accurate dates and other relevant information add to the value of the book. The author, apart from giving all the factual information, traces not only the ups and downs of their careers, but also, through it, conveys encyclopaedic information on the development and changes in the world of Hindi film music and how it has kept pace with the times.

Not just in terms of musical trends, but also how the music in Hindi films has
reflected the perceptions and mindsets of the Indian people. The book is enlivened by rare black and white and colour photographs of the composers and their singers. The author has not only taken
note of all the big names, but also ensured that ample data is available on the lesser-known, less fortunate musicians, who added to the wealth of Hindi film music but were ignored by posterity.

A beautiful work, not just for the Hindi movie buff and music lover,
but also for the social anthropologist and subaltern historian.

Very nice printing and a neat get-up add to the beauty of the book.
